Nassau County Police Officer

Description:

Police officers protect our communities, our lives, and our property.  As a police officer, you will work to prevent crimes, arrest those who commit crimes, and work to maintain the order of civilized society.  This will include patrolling neighborhoods to which you are assigned, responding to emergencies of all sorts, assisting in the investigation of crimes, and processing arrests.

Despite the many people, in and out of uniform, who discredit or dishonor this career, it is of the utmost importance.  We, at the Bishop Smith Foundation, believe the most important aspect of your job as a police officer is enforcing the law – equally.  That may entail patrolling neighborhoods that you may not be willing to drive through otherwise or arresting and charging someone who looks exactly like you.

This career, unlike most others on our site, should not be undertaken simply because you need a good job.  Only those who believe they have what it takes to be fair and those who are called to protect EVERYONE – even those who may speak a different language.

Doing this job wrong could provide criminals with whole communities that are unwilling or afraid to turn on them, thereby making this job harder and more dangerous for other police officers.  But doing this job right could encourage whole communities to stand together against all criminal elements under the common understanding that the police are not the enemy.  The latter makes the streets safer for our children AND our police.

Criminal History:
Applicants must pass a rather vigorous background check.  However, some offenses will not disqualify you from consideration depending on the nature of the offense.  As with most things, do not take yourself out of consideration – let someone else tell you, “no.”  Be honest and forthcoming about every offense, carefully explaining the facts and circumstances.  That being said, if your criminal history contains incidents of violence, you probably cannot be trusted with a loaded firearm.
